How come I can pronounce every non-anglicised Welsh and Irish placename going but have been mispronouncing “Lewes” all my life. What is going on with the English language.

My surname is a fun one, Europeans tend to pronounce it correctly, as in the same way my family does, whereas most English pronounce it incorrectly It doesn't bother me a jot but I do find it interesting

There’s a Loose near Maidstone. I’ve always been rather fond of the Loose Women’s Institute. Although tbf, it’s pronounces looz not looss.
