How frequent are your seizures Dawn, if you don't mind me asking? Why can't meds eliminate them completely? I should Google. 🙂

Not speaking for Dawn, Mate but seizures can't be entirely eliminated because in most cases the exact causes of them are not known. Neurons just do their thing and boom. I take so much medication that i rattle, yet i still have 'breakthrough' seizures.

Are there known triggers? Can you feel one coming or are they out of the blue? Sorry for q's. Realised my ignorance on subject.

No probs with questions. Triggers vary dependent on individual. Personally, i trigger with lights or images flashing at a certain frequency, stress, tiredness also triggers. I get about a 3-4 second warning a weird 'whoosing' sound then I'm down.

Is this a lifelong thing? Or can it develop at any time?

Mine was a specific event: a motorcycle accident in my early 20's. Many people - from birth, Many others - anytime during their lives. My Mam started with seizures in her late 50's. It's as unpredictable as it sounds. Some folks will have it in childhood, yet 'grow out of it'

Going back to the subject of triggers and the overall inexplicable nature of epilepsy: There is a case of a 15 year old girl who suffered abuse as a child. She developed epilepsy in her early teens, her seizures were only triggered if she looked at the back of her own left hand.

It's an intriguing condition. I've only known one person with it and they apparently experienced seizures extremely rarely. They still weren't allowed to hold a driving licence though. A lot of ignorance about it. On my part at least. 🙂

It certainly is. I get 4-5 a month normally, more with stress. Driving doesn't bother me, my life is adjusted accordingly. You certainly are not the only one who doesn't understand the condition: neither do i ... thanks for being interested though.

I’m similar to David, stress and tiredness trigger mine. And 1 in 4 people have intractable epilepsy where seizures can be lessened but not stopped, and the 3 in 4 often have breakthrough seizures too.

Just read that it affects 1 in a 100 people in UK. And yet there seems to be so little public awareness of it compared to other conditions.

That's true. Research into it is also at a snails pace and most meds are pretty out dated: Think sledgehammer to crack a walnut, last meds i was given to try were actually devised for the veterinary industry for seizures in dogs - Pardon the pun but they made me barking..
