Went to buy a book for a friend and the woman in front of me in the queue was looking for a book, didn’t know the title, author, what the cover looked like, or anything about the plot, just that it came out this year. Bookseller was incredibly patient.

It's super early Iain Banks, so wildly creative but at points unrelentingly nasty. It's not my favourite of his contemporary novels but it's worth a read.

Put me off him for years!

Yes if you like him generally, but it is an early work and so kind of lurid. Not sure it would win you over if you hadn't enjoyed other stuff?

Maybe later, but *pleeeeeease* read Espedair Street, Whit, The Business, all three are unrelentingly amazing books. Then read The Culture novels. If you thought you didn’t like science fiction, these will persuade you that you were mistaken.
