Went to buy a book for a friend and the woman in front of me in the queue was looking for a book, didn’t know the title, author, what the cover looked like, or anything about the plot, just that it came out this year. Bookseller was incredibly patient.

(I couldn’t remember the author surname and title of the book I wanted so spent ten minutes in the wrong section googling endlessly until I hit the jackpot and could ask if they had it in, cos I’m a wuss)

It is very definitely nonfiction! Poor bookseller, misleading customers are the worst

Counter story: I once went into a vinyl shop back before they were new again, looking for a recording of Satie that I'd heard on the radio. All I could say was, it sounded like a gentler version than usual. Clerk got it right, first try. Retail expertise is so underrated.

It was by Anne Queffélec, btw.

Alexa, which bit of ‘amazon only sells you what they want’ do you not understand? You can’t find a random stranger to find a book on an iPad. Keep humans in retail!
