I start every lecture reminding students to do this. It makes a real difference to those that do!

I once tried having office hours in the pub with a promise to buy a beer for anyone who came to see me. It didn't work.pic.twitter.com/xkY6yJS7s1

I wish they had too. Not that I’m a prof. But I did teach tutorials while doing my PhD and longed for students to turn up to office hours for more than getting their essay marks.

This definitely can happen (I’ve been there as a student
) but like everything don’t let one (or even two) put you off. Shame on them if they behave like that. The majority of us really care about our students and want to help.

I'm a PhD student and only started emailing my supervisors with additional questions about a year ago because I finally realised - after my own undergrad students did it with me - it was a thing you could do.
-
As a supervisor I love it when a student calls by. I value every chat even if is just hello ones. The connection with phd students is one of (if not THE) best part of my job.
