The Poisonous Euros Atmosphere Fan added,
In clearing we had kids from state schools with straight As predicted BBC. We took then through clearing. Posh kids always got their parents to ring, who screamed at me when I said we wouldn’t take them.
If you want to make it fair, it has to be based on achieved grades. Interviewing students is overrated, heavily biased, and a proven waste of time. An algorithm can better tell you who to take.
Warwick didn’t interview kids from deprived neighbourhoods/schools, just accepted them, ditto York. Kids from poor schools perform far better than privately schooled kids with the same grades.
On my course the most common offer was AAB, with some ABBs. Of those I talked to about offers, the state school kids were split between AAB and ABB offers, but all the private school kids got AAB offers. I was ABB. It seemed fair to me then and now, but actual grades are better.
On English the difference was the fact a handful of us weren’t interviewed, just straight accepted, but were still all AAA.
IIRC English was the only major course at Warwick to interview, wasn't it? Not surprised at the AAA though! You were the hardest course to get on, I think someone told me you had a 20:1 applications:places ratio. We were only 14:1.
Yeah, four times as many people applied to English at Warwick as Oxford? Wild. I was the only person in my school to get offers outside Wales IIRC.
Also applied to UCD and considered going there until Warwick offered me a massive scholarship
