I worked in university admissions and this makes sense: provate schools inflate predicted grades, state schools often predict lower than students attainhttps://twitter.com/SkyNews/status/1161542378303426562 …

Labour is calling for university applications to be based on actual grades, rather than predictions. Shadow education sec @AngelaRayner says students from poorer backgrounds often get lower predicted grades, making the system "unfair". Read more here: http://po.st/o522E2  pic.twitter.com/stRXi9hdBl

In clearing we had kids from state schools with straight As predicted BBC. We took then through clearing. Posh kids always got their parents to ring, who screamed at me when I said we wouldn’t take them.

If you want to make it fair, it has to be based on achieved grades. Interviewing students is overrated, heavily biased, and a proven waste of time. An algorithm can better tell you who to take.

Warwick didn’t interview kids from deprived neighbourhoods/schools, just accepted them, ditto York. Kids from poor schools perform far better than privately schooled kids with the same grades.

Anyway, it wasa proper joy telling students with better than anticipated grades they could come to Warwick, but the whole system is currently dysfunctional. Replace it with an algorithm, use attained grades.

yeah, I didn't understand why my predicted a level grades were so low tbh and it meant I didn't get onto any English degrees.. it totally crushed my confidence. I ended up getting 4 As and coming top in the results at my college but by then the damage was done

Yep, it’s a properly awful system that stacks the odds against people who already have the odds stacked against them. So sorry that happened, grim stuff.

This would also stop teachers coming under pressure from parents and A level students to bump up predicted grades so they can get offers from Universities asking for higher grades than initially predicted- as a former teacher I found this was a regular occurrence

When did this all change? When I went to uni, late 80's, the offer showed the grades I had to get for each subject. Some people were given offers based on attaining a minimum number of points (A=1,...) What was the problem that caused the change / why can't it go back to that?

Right bang in the middle of this with my 18 year old daughter. Crap predicted grades from her school. Find out tomorrow the reality.
