Didn't know about the US, but when we went to Italy & insisted on somewhere with a free beach we ended up somewhere decidedly déclassé. Maybe Britain's the weird one.

depends. some have showers restrooms etc and it can be like $5-10 per carload of people. Some hotels gave their own access. there are free accesses but they’re usually more deserted/unkempt
