[assault] Are you ever left speechless by airport pat down body searches? I feel like I've just been indecently assaulted. I just disassociated and struggled not to cry. I fly frequently, including from here, and have never had that before. @BrusselsAirport #FlyingWhileDisabled

As a wheelchair user I'm used to body searches every single time I fly. To variation in intensity and technique from airport to airport and between staff members. But fucking hell that was awful.

The irony of experiencing that directly after a Skype call about experiences of disabled travellers in European airports.

It was a trainee staff member I think, she seemed really unsure of what she was doing, even about drug swabbing (something I've had every time I've flown for the past 20 journeys at least). But still. I can't believe that.

Oi,
@BrusselsAirport, I spoke to another wheelchair user on my flight and she had the same experience. I'll be coordinating with them by email. This is *not okay*.3 replies 1 retweet 68 likesShow this thread -
Spending time on the runway doing my legal research. I'm still struggling to understand what actually happened.

If disabled people can't use airports without being assaulted, that is a serious breach of their human rights, and is not supported by international law. International law doesn't say invasive pat-downs are required, that's the implementation of some countries and isn't universal

Also, chatting with the other passenger, they too had an unlawful search by a trainee staff member, under the direction of a supervisor, using them as a guinea pig.

After speaking with others at the airport I feel much better changing "it felt like being assaulted" to "it was assault". I'll be interacting with
@BrusselsAirport on that basis.#FlyingWhileDisabled2 replies 0 retweets 63 likesShow this thread -
Right, I'll be contacting Brussels Airport about this shortly.
