Which literature did school bring alive for you, and which did it kill off? We were all besotted with Seamus Heaney after studying him, but The Handmaids Tale left us all united in fury at how much we despised everything about it.

I'm with you on Duffy poetry, sad to say when I see an onion I get angry and think "I don't care that it's a metaphor, I don't want an onion. Arghhgghhghghg"

Wrote a nice essay once about why Heaney was shit and his poems didn't mean anything. Hated Handmaid's tale. Refused to spoil Jane Eyre by analysing it. I was an utter pain in the arse as a student.

This is exactly why I wrote my new book, ‘The Point of Poetry.’ It’s an educational tragedy that so many open-minded children leave school, of all places, and grow up to be real metrophobes. It even happens to the ones who get A*s.
