Which literature did school bring alive for you, and which did it kill off? We were all besotted with Seamus Heaney after studying him, but The Handmaids Tale left us all united in fury at how much we despised everything about it.

I did FFTMC. Wasn't a fan aged 16 but grew to love it.

Hated Hardy at school. I have tried very hard to like his books since but still can't. They always start well but I get bored half way through.

hated Hardy's poetry at school, only recently came to re-read and like it.

Oh Dawn, we did Tess, too. And I’ve read all of Hardy’s novels since. He’s the most wonderful writer. Jude The Obscure and the Return of the Native are probably my favourites apart from Tess.

There’s the most beautiful image in Tess. Do you remember the part where Tess’s mouth is described as ‘a rosebud filled with snow’. Such a poetic use of prose.

The Woodlanders we studied in school, I didn’t get it at the time but went back to it and since then read Jude the Obscure, Far from the Madding Crowd and Tess of the d’Urbevilles. Far from the Madding Crowd is a favourite

Jude made me cry at least as many tears as Tess did..! (That's a recommendation)

Hearing a middle aged man praise the 'realness' of Tess, a middle aged male writers wet dream of a female character, made me incredibly angry as a teenage girl. There really weren't enough female writers & 'real' female characters on the curriculum when I was at school.
