Most of my teachers were not particularly memorable, but had two great ones - in English and Sociology, plus I studied literature at uni, so did love a fair bit

Of Mice & Men at GCSE. I just ended up feeling really guilty that I loathed George and Lenny and couldn't give a shit about their naive plan for farming sodding rabbits. Alive - Love Song Of J Alfred Prufrock, because I was 17 and a weeping boy.

Hated Mill on the Floss - she eloped while unconscious ffs. Loved - the lady of shallot - we all used to fling our arms out dramatically and sigh “the curse has come upon me” at the time of the month

Fell in love with Plath, developed a powerful, burning hatred for Manley Hopkins.

I came to fall in love with An Inspector Calls (though I wasn't a huge fan of the teacher, so that may have been my own affections for the social change). But most, if not all, poetry was ruined for me. I still struggle to read most poetry esp. Duffy at all, it's a real shame.

Yeah I’ve never been much of a poetry person, and think a lot of that is down to school.

Richard II. I was enthralled by it. Death of a salesman was turgid a d over wrought

School murdered Hardy for me. (Not sure how.) Bout three weeks out of school, I picked up a one quid paperback of Return of the Native and pretty quickly realised he is the best pre-20th novelist in English language.
