Also if you hear me on the radio, I’m in bed in my pyjamas, unless I’m on the Today programme. Sometimes I just change from the night before’s pyjamas into fresh ones.

I think UK-based freelancers have an overall better time of it than Americans... with our lack of social safety net, and all.
-
Yeah 100%: an NHS that you don’t have to pay for. Our social security/benefits system is a mess because of the Tories though. I claimed three weeks unemployment in 2009 & got money within 5 days. Now it’s a 5 week wait, if you’re lucky.

Late payment (sometimes months late) is by far the worst aspect of freelancing for me. Thankfully my best client pays usually within 5 days (which is most unusual).
-
Yeah I tend to stick to the people who pay promptly. I understand that’s a luxury and some starting out journos have to take everything. But I can’t bear spending more time chasing money than actually writing.

Only way I was able to work at a decent level without working 70 hours a week!

I’ve worked from home since 1989 - it’s outputs not inputs that count

Good for new journos too. Forces you to learn how to write for different styles and make contacts. Also creates a reputation across the industry instead of just a byline at one outlet

Absolutely. Every organisation knows cash flow is so vital. Always pay freelancers, solos, small companies quickly.
