having such consistently routine problems getting paid as a freelancer (same as everyone, it seems) that i wonder at which point this stuff stops getting chalked up as accounts team 'incompetence' rather than deliberate systems designed for the exact purpose of not paying people

i find myself getting extremely frustrated with the specific point of contact, for being rude, for not just simply entering details into a form - and of course, it should be that easy (and they often are rude lol) but their function is to be a point of friction

they are 'the' individual to blame in place of the company itself, the seemingly incompetent jobsworth who refuses to process payments because you haven't adhered to increasingly arbitrary admin rules. it's the same tactic i've seen used in my experiences with the DWP

companies could make this process (and their admin teams' jobs) easier, ofc, but it's not in their interests. they are absolved of blame, because you are frustrated at this individual, but if the individual truly was to blame, these companies wouldn't insist you go through them

I was told that companies try keep the money in their accounts as long as possible because the money is usually in high interest accounts and so is making them money. probably not true of all but i'd wager the bigger companies it could be

I've weirdly had not that bad a time of late but i think thats because i only write for about 3 publications regularly and know all the finance teams quite well

There’s one magazine I stopped writing for recently over this, but same, mostly been lucky and stuck with those who pay regularly.

yeah for me thats kind of part of how i choose - if they pay me on time and aren't dickheads to deal with then i'll pitch them first every time
