Wondering why Plaid Cymru never experienced a similar young, left resurgence to the same level the SNP did. Lots of people first drawn into politics by the Iraq war, disillusioned by Labour, they could have followed the SNP model and hoovered up disillusioned young socialists.

This by @logwil123 on the current realignment of Welsh Labour, in @tribunemagazine is very good, expanding on the rightward drift I allude to in my columnhttps://tribunemag.co.uk/2018/11/clear-red-progress-in-wales …

Lots of south Welsh seats felt bitter and that they were used by the central Labour office in London to impose loyal candidates rather than local councillors and activists, with varying degrees of truth. People felt they were “parachuted in”:https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/apr/02/newport-west-byelection-labour-brexit-jeremy-corbyn …

Peter Law is the most noteable example, winning the seat Nye Bevan and Paul Foot held, from Labour: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2006/apr/25/obituaries.uk … Jessica Morden, MP for Newport West, next door to Paul Flynn, grew up in Cwmbran but some members she had no Newport connection, no trust circulating...

Welsh Labour’s disavowal of the Corbyn leadership during the 2017 general election seemed like a step backwards too, distancing from a very popular manifesto: all things that Plaid could have capitalised on.

This is very good on Welsh Labour’s problems and the seeming passivity of the left grassroots, by @Dai_alectichttps://newsocialist.org.uk/neither-red-nor-green/ …

That's a process that only took place after the referendum. The SNP absorbed a mass movement, rather than seriously positioning itself to the left.

A slight move to the left following the collapse of the SSP hovered up enough votes to win elections and start the momentum

Welsh Nationalism felt a bit of old fashioned, posh people activity growing up and the Welsh Assembly seemed like just enough devolution thank you very much.

As an Irish growing-up in Wales, even with issues like Iraq, Plaid still lacked left-wing credentials. They might have been leftish in the South, but the North Walkman element of the party were still in control at that point, and that was VERY offputting for me.
