That's a process that only took place after the referendum. The SNP absorbed a mass movement, rather than seriously positioning itself to the left.

As an Irish growing-up in Wales, even with issues like Iraq, Plaid still lacked left-wing credentials. They might have been leftish in the South, but the North Walkman element of the party were still in control at that point, and that was VERY offputting for me.
