Platforming fascists, and characterising them as harmless but confused people who don’t pose a real threat has been a huge part of their rise. Sure @pennyred can explain this isn’t a volte face.

If Laurie has explained why it was cool for her to pal about with fascists two years ago but isn’t now, please do point me to the explanation, because I’d love to learn why we were all wrong then when we criticised her but are somehow right now.

In the piece two years ago she literally described them as brownshirts. I don't see what changed.

I read the 2017 piece. It was appalling.

The 2017 piece portrayed these shitbrained fascists accurately enough, as I recall. Portraying this as a big switcheroo is a bit disingenuous when Penny's Tweet could have appeared in the original article without vastly changing its tone.

The 2017 piece has been rightly criticized for portraying M.Y. and his followers as weaklings, "lost boys," minimizing the threat they represent. But it was written about and at a moment where M.Y. had just lost all his power, and indeed became a forgotten joke in the movement.
