I find it really interesting how slow the CofE have been on austerity: I remember when Welby came into the Guardian he was defensively proud about starting out in oil and finance. They tried too hard to be apolitical, everything to everyone, Wonga being a prime example.

My initial reaction to Welby was negative precisrly because of that background. Tbh, I still don't know what to think of him.

I felt the same - it feels as if he has ever soslowly come around to the need for a more radical engagement with politics. Yet he’s still struggling. Defending the status quo will do nothing to stymie the exodus of young people from the CofE....
