Just got into a major slanging match with an idiot who refused to move her carrier bag off the only available seat, who quickly learnt you should only threaten to punch someone if you’re going to follow through or you’ll get endlessly laughed at.

So yes, I was more than happy to creatively insult her, and took some joy from the fact this woman was furious a) I was laughing at her b) I refused to be intimidated by her, c) hopefully she won't refuse to move her bags in future.

People are very happy to publicly abuse disabled people, verbally and sometimes physically, so under no circumstances be surprised the Tories have gotten away with treating us as barely even second class citizens.

One woman was so upset she left at the same stop as me, despite needing a different stop: she was genuinely so upset I thought she might cry. I just laughed repeatedly at the abuser and held my nerve, but it made me realise how used to it I was, & how rarely other people see it.

How do people get like this? It baffles me that some people can reach a point in their life where they think it's totally acceptable to talk to someone like this. How truly awful everyone around them must be to end up like that.

I don't kid myself that this kind of abuse hasn't been in people's heads all along (we're not the fluffy, tolerant nation we think we are) but it's the letting it out that seems to be on the increase. Hope you're OK.

And folk seem quite keen to put abuse down to "some kind of mental illness". Maybe. But let's face it, some people are just plain nasty.

There really are some unbelievably nasty people around. Glad you were able to stand up to her and that you were supported by the other passengers.
