Soubry’s opining about “tribalism” is disingenuous too but appeals to precisely the right media demographic. Of course politics is tribal, it involves the battle of one ideology against (at least) another, and championing one group over another.

Pretending it isn’t, or that “evidence-based” policy exists, always prioritises bland managerialism over anything else, and that - surprise! - sustains the status quo, and does nothing to combat poverty and industrial decline.

If you spend all day around politicians, it’s tempting to view all policies as benign since they’re perfectly civil to you. Good people can do bad things, but equally some politicians are just bad people, the lure of power often attracts bad people.

Endlessly complaining about a lack of civility ignores the very real harm austerity does - it has literally killed people - and is such a one way street (“I am a crusading, impartial commentator, you are a Berniebro/Corbynista”). Politics is an angry field, by necessity.

Yup. You're right. Some of us have supported Labour all our lives until recently. We are now utterly furious at the racism Jeremy Corbyn has inflicted on Jews and oppose him out of necessity. Never Tory, but now, sadly, never racist Labour.

I read 'The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power' a few years ago. I think many of the revelations and conclusions would apply to legislatures. All that centralised power is a magnet for sociopaths.

When they talk about "civility in politics" I always remember what Neil Gaiman said about Terry Pratchett after his passing, how anger was an engine that powered him. Angry gets things done, & I feel they want to take it away from us so we can't do things https://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/sep/24/terry-pratchett-angry-not-jolly-neil-gaiman …

And many people seem to have far more invested in their self-image as a smart and level-headed individual who makes up their own mind about things, than they do in the future of their society.
