Soubry’s opining about “tribalism” is disingenuous too but appeals to precisely the right media demographic. Of course politics is tribal, it involves the battle of one ideology against (at least) another, and championing one group over another.

Pretending it isn’t, or that “evidence-based” policy exists, always prioritises bland managerialism over anything else, and that - surprise! - sustains the status quo, and does nothing to combat poverty and industrial decline.

If you spend all day around politicians, it’s tempting to view all policies as benign since they’re perfectly civil to you. Good people can do bad things, but equally some politicians are just bad people, the lure of power often attracts bad people.

Endlessly complaining about a lack of civility ignores the very real harm austerity does - it has literally killed people - and is such a one way street (“I am a crusading, impartial commentator, you are a Berniebro/Corbynista”). Politics is an angry field, by necessity.

There were a lot of people clutching their pearls because some Labour supporters were bidding the Tingers a robust goodbye and good riddance on Twitter. Naive or disingenuous.

When you're not greatly affected by the results of political debate then it begins to look like a game or an academic excercise. For these people it makes sense to attack tribalism because they can't see that their game is killing people. The affected just seem rude or aggressive

Tribalism/ party politics is inherently flawed for the reasons that you give (mind you, democracy is inherently flawed too) It would be very interesting to poll all the teens marching for climate change to see if they have a party allegiance as they are the future of politics.

Centrism always tries to deny any ideology but its evidently present in all political groups - ideology and belief systems underpin any movement and from this policy develops - it also binds members to the party - to suggest a politics without values and beliefs is impossible

It’s a marker of just how successful thatcher was at printing her ideology that people think things like “tax take funds spend” are just neutral statements of fact rather than ideological. Enables them to think they aren’t tribal, just “realists”
