Just felt faint on seeing £38,000 for one. How can your parents afford that and not buy you new jam.

there was SO MUCH chat around university fees when I was at UCL that £9k was nothing compared to school fees, even from staff/students who opposed them, and it was (another) one of those moments of realising that these were not really My People

I remember these pricks boasting they’d taken their student loan and put it in a high interest account because it was “a great rate”. I needed mine to eat.

they clearly never had to walk around the supermarket with a calculator and £3.46, trying to work out how to eat for a week

Yep. Also I was the £1k fees generation and I remember having a fight with someone about whether my LEA was paying my fees (they were) because they couldn't conceive that my mum might earn less than £21k and thought it must be a scam.

I knew people whose parents 'invested' their student loans, and others whose parents bought them houses to rent out rooms to chums. Meanwhile I was applying for a hardship grant.

I remember people talking about that as an amazing investment opportunity. I had a teacher at school who talked about what a great deal student loans were for canny investments and how we shouldn't protest fees.

Oh my goodness. As an army brat who was at one of these schools 'on benefits', the stories I could tell. Let's settle for this: I know 30+ people from my academic year group of 97 who live in £1m+ properties they've never paid a penny towards.

Also, try having a social life with people who love going out in Mayfair and Kensington when you've got Redcar money. Debtor? I hardly knew her.

Literally saw the same. I was an undergrad with somebody who took out a student loan, in order that her and her dad could buy a fancy car with it for her. They were very very loaded, and just saw it as easy money at a good rate.

I remember this too. I couldn’t believe it was possible ppl were able to do this but manifestly they did. The rest of us had to pay the bills with it.

On the other hand, their parents all paid £38k a year for them to go to the same university that you got to for FREE. *makes L shape with fingers*
