It was still in use, but particularly charming were all the original loan cards tucked inside, with dates and stamps spanning 40+ years of use.

Shame there was no reference to the socialist Settlement movement, which brought opportunities to families like my mother's in Spennymoor, Co Durham before the war: miners' wives acting in Chekhov, working people engaging in art, sculpture, painting, music - & political debate.
