Irish names seem to stump most people. People can’t seem to figure out mine, either, even though it IS basically a phonetic spelling. Half my life seems to be explaining my name, as I’m sure you can relate!

Omg yes! My twitter bio used to lay it out because it is a daily struggle. What is yours? (If you don’t mind me asking)

My cousin Meadhbh has a LOT of fun. Please say Airline was autocorrect, and not said in person.

I went to school with a Meadhbh but it was a gaelscoil, so everyone was called Caoimhe or Meadhbh or Sadhbh. The Alien thing was via email, so I give them the benefit of the doubt.

Was surprised at how many people struggled witb Welsh names at my school: Angharsd is pretty phonetic, ditto Alys and Bryn

Celtic pronunciation patterns confound so many native English speakers. They don’t get that these are distinct languages so therefore not mappable to English. It’s a constant frustration.

I have a friend named Siobhan. She uses a different name for baristas and delivery people and calls it her “nom de pizza.”
