Didn’t notice this at all, until university, where the posh girls wore tracksuits and treated me like a curio for blowdrying my hair for a 9am seminar. Message being: “If you belong here, you don’t need to make an effort.”

At Warwick it was Jack Wills/Hollister for some reason. I dressed as I do now, but back then having your nails done was rare, I painted mine every day. I remember one posh girl was commended for “making an effort” because she wore Converse instead of UGGs. Never me, in heels.
