So, a thread:
there are different types of seizure
“thrashing” tonic-clonic seizure. They fall to the floor unconscious, jerking limbs, might bite their tongue:
DO
- cushion their head
- move objects away
- put them in recovery position
DON’T
- put anything in their mouth

Focal/partial seizure - they seem out of it, in a very deep daydream, often with repetitive movements, such as opening/closing mouth, making noises (I blink a lot)
DO
- guide them away from danger
- stay with them til they come to
- talk calmly with them until they respondShow this thread -
- when they recover, tell them what happened DON’T - try and startle them out of it, with loud noises or by shaking them - give them food or drink while they’re seizing - restrain them

Quite often, people having seizures might appear blackout drunk or tipsy. But you should help people regardless of need and can perform welfare checks quickly.https://twitter.com/dawnhfoster/status/1066695540929368065?s=21 …

Glad you’re ok. Honestly, I think bystanders just find the appearance of t-c seizures to be totally terrifying and feel the need to DO SOMETHING, however unhelpful that is. And partial seizures confuse people. Heart attacks get funding & awareness, seizures

You forgot to add remain calm, be confident - it’s very important to calm others around you when giving first aid in public. :)

I’ve had to tell people to stop doing some of the things you’ve listed when seeing someone have a seizure on the tube on several occasions. Equally I’ve also seen people totally ignore the situation entirely. Made me sad on both occasions.

Thanks for this Dawn. I saw a guy have a seizure in Boots, and thankfully did what you suggest - cushioned his head, put him into the recovery position - but was very much guessing what to do so glad it was the right things.

Well done for stepping in and using your common sense! Sure he appreciated it.
