Most of the time when these things have happened, they're out of the blue, deliberately designed to throw you, and you're so shocked you don't know how to react. Hence staying quiet, or nodding/laughing along.

You can't challenge everything all the time. Some slip by. My current tactic is to ask the person to repeat what they said (I am not good at witty replies). But do find that the obvious reluctance to repeat makes the point for me.

Ah, that's a great tactic, thank you! I was just taken aback, and it was such a surprising thing to say, I needed a second opinion in case I was overreacting (I wasn't)
