This is a relentless problem, it needn't be. Book trains & hotels if you want people to speak. They're doing you a favour by coming. You won't reimburse them quickly, no one does. So I was going to spend 12 hours on trains in two days for an UNPAID talk, then asked to pay again.

I'm saying no to talks more often in future. I *am* going to Edinburgh on Monday to a talk organised by a small student group, who booked my train and hotel with no fuss, whereas the Scottish Parl could not. Small charities/groups are great, big institutions are dreadful & rude.

Also, most people don't really want to do talks. The fewer emails you get about them, the better. I have pulled out before because the organiser has emailed unnecessary stuff every day and demanded answers. This is work, and you aren't paying me for it.

Most of the people I do talks for are brilliant. They're small charities/political groups/people making a difference. They're professional, to the point, and make me feel welcome and I happily talk unpaid. It's the small number of big orgs that turn it into an ordeal and are rude

Ex programme administrator of a very large book festival sucks teeth loudly and tuts.

I can't work out if the attitude was across the board, or because I'm young/female. I'm freelance, I cannot afford to pay to speak at an event I don't want to do.

Is the correct emoji. Just cannot afford to pay £145 to give an unpaid talk and give up so much of my time as well.
