Interesting! Where did you see that? And I always assumed Welsh universities were very Welsh (knew barely anyone other than me who went to an English one), though haven't ever checked.
You're right on Welsh Univesrities being Welsh & increasingly like Scotland in this trend (fees cheaper). In terms of retiree population - the Welshness response mirrors the Welsh Tory MPs, less Welsh more likely a Tory MP. 1/2
And this was explained to me fairly recently that English retirees contribute greatly to the Tory Vote, so Stephen Crabb & David Intellectual Davies are both in non-hardcore Welsh areas on this map. 2/2
That's amazing. I always wondered how on earth they were elected at all, but that makes perfect sense.
Although - importantly - this doesn't map across to the Welsh Leave / Remain vote.
I went to Swansea university and about half the people on my floor in halls were from Cardiff, so it certainly seemed to attract quite a few local people. Also you could take exams in Welsh, which would be less useful to English students.
I went to Cardiff Uni from Devon. Knew 20 other people from my school who also went there.
