"But when I said a hotdog I thought you understood that it should be cooked, and come in a bun, with ketchup & a side of fries." Ordering a hotdog is a loaded term, it carries mutual understanding to it that need not be explicitly verbally stated. So too with believing in Christ

What does it mean to believe in Christ? Thanks be to God Scripture itself exegetes this for us in John 3:36, look at the Greek. Here John contrasts believing and disbelieving (English translations) but check the Greek https://biblehub.com/interlinear/john/3-36.htm …

We see believing is pisteuon and unbelieving is apeithon, which translates as not obeying. The opposite of believing is disobeying, as Scripture shows. We see this also in Romans, look at the first and last mentions of faith in Romans (Rom 1:5 & Rom 16:26)

We see Paul use the phrase "obedience of faith" - like bookends to his great epistle, enclosing all his theology on faith within as being intrinsically connected with obedience. Faith / believing are loaded words, like the hotdog - it needs fries, faith needs obedience

So with that in mind, looking back at Acts 16 what do we see? Paul taught the family the Gospel and then baptized them all. If faith alone saved, why baptize? Because Christ commands it for salvation. When Paul taught the Gospel, how did it go?

Because baptism is a visible act of obedience after regeneration. It is not salvific.

Surprisingly, baptism is salvific, despite us scratching our heads over how the water can possibly mean anything. But Scripture says it so: "Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you" (1 Pet 3:21) And "He who believes & is baptized will be saved" Mark 16:16

So Scripture explicitly confirms the salvific nature of baptism, but indeed it is a bit odd. Thankfully Scripture helps us out by showing historical typology of baptism. God is actually a bit boring, because He is perfect. Being perfect, He gets things right the first time

Was the thief on the cross saved even though not baptized?

I would note that Scripture no where states that the Good Thief was unbaptized, so that assumption is risky to make. I have a couple thoughts on his salvation. 1) At that time it is unclear if the Old Covenant or New Covenant was in effect, as Christ had yet to die / resurrect

If NC not yet in effect then we should be questioning his circumcision rather than baptism. 2) If NC in effect then, as per Scripture, we know that A) baptism is necessary and B) he was saved. Thus the safe assumption is that yes, he was baptized already (but not recorded)

so people were saved in different ways? and circumcision was a requirement? Esau was circumcised and not saved Noah was not circumcised and saved I don't think that is a safe assumption but rather wild speculation 😉

At the end of the day ever single person saved was saved through Jesus Christ, including all of the OT heroes. But Christ can require of different people different things, such as circumcision post Moses, baptism post Resurrection. None of these guarantee salvation

If Christ had not yet made salvation possible (per your belief), how were OT people saved?

This would also explain why this man dying on a cross so readily recognized God next to him (an astounding thing to do if he never heard of Christ before!) - he was probably already a follower of Christ and familiar with Him (and thus likely baptized).
