NEW: In today, my colleagues and I make the case that ending fossil fuel subsidies matters greatly, “in ways both material and political.” THREAD. 📰No pay wall:

Today, uncovers a UK and NL taxpayer-funded organisation that spends $750m on fossil fuels abroad, often in the world’s poorest countries. is this what climate leadership looks like?

Today, on Waitangi Day, we honour Te Tiriti and we honour the courage, wisdom and compassion Māori have shown in protecting our whenua, awa and moana. We know that climate justice means Indigenous sovereignty.

It’s Waitangi Day and I’m seeing vegans complaining about meat being served at the marae. That’s not how we fix the crisis. Let’s be clear: there is no climate justice without justice for Indigenous Peoples.

"When you think of permafrost regions, you might think of featureless tundras, but most is actually boreal forest." Between permafrost melt, fires, and "land use changes" we are watching our planet transform from forest to savannah right before our eyes.

It's embarrassing for to have their name associated with this. As a WRI alum, it's dreadful to see a respected think tank provide cover for yet more government handouts to the oil and gas industry that may well INCREASE net emissions: (1/?)

The fossil fuel divestment movement has irreversibly changed the world's perception on fossil fuels. They are increasingly a pariah industry even in the amoral world of finance.

I wonder whether government infrastructure decisions would be different if the cost of overshooting our Paris Agreement 2030 target appeared as a (multi-billion) liability in the Crown account (excerpt below from the Cabinet paper when we signed up to Paris)

The Government is spending 3x more on a single 22km road ($692m) than the entire $200m decarbonisation package.

"The Government's $817 million spend on a new 24-kilometer, four-lane highway from Otaki to north of Levin would be responsible for six million tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2080, or 7.5 percent of New Zealand's gross 2017 greenhouse emissions."

Decommissioning those coal burners is like taking 1200 cars off the road - which is less than 0.5% of the 3.2 million cars on the road in Aotearoa. Confronting the crisis needs bold, transformative action, not tweaks at the margins.

Today, the government committed $200m to decarbonisation - less than 2% of the total new infrastructure spend. $10m of that is allocated to replacing 9 public owned coal burners - of around 200, leaving 190 coal burners still owned by this government.
