Columnist @davidlaz has spent the last year and a half trying to get off antidepressants. “At first I felt a bit better. Now I feel worse...I've even started thinking about going back on antidepressants, maybe for the rest of my life,” he says. https://lat.ms/2lA1MMX

Not my intent to minimize other people's struggles. Just raising the issue of how difficult it can be to come off a number of prescription meds

As an aside, last time I stopped a course of SSRIs, I tapered off with the careful guidance of my psychiatrist. Still got gnarly discontinuation syndrome that lasted for almost a month and knocked me out of work for several days. Still find your comparison disingenuous at best.

If you're going to write about the difficulties of tapering off SSRIs (though I don't believe you specified the class of antidepressants), then do it. Don't couch it in the language of addiction. Equating those things is irresponsible.

David, david, david. You stepped in it big time, big boy! You’re a journalist with a powerful platform. Your words have impact separate from your intention. Just repeating this was (just) your experience doesn’t cut it. Where oh where are your editors? Oh yeah...

And why does someone *have* to come off them? Do you really see no difference between antidepressants and opioids? Do you fail to see the parallels between antidepressants and insulin? Are you trying to "kick" your insulin "habit" because you fear it means you are weak?

This whole thread is shameful, and not what I would expect from @jbarro Comparing SSRIs to insulin is stupid and dishonest. Not everyone needs to take a drug forever, sometimes you can move away from them, other times you might want to change medications.
