[PiVR 1/9]: Our recent preprint () presents PiVR by , an affordable and easy to build open-source tool to present small animals with virtual realities to characterize behavior and its neural underpinnings.

Would you like to figure out how smart flies are by developing new behavioral methods (like visual place learning, below)? We are looking for a new postdoc to join us: If interested and at -- let’s talk ASAP [RT appreciated!]

Since I can't sleep, A thread on France and the 14 african countries who still pay tax colonies up to now. I know we cannot compare colonizers but France as a state continues to the most racist and white supremacist and thriving on colony taxes!

Shame on for supporting this despicable letter. I hereby renounce my membership and urge all of my colleagues to do the same.

Holy cow! We got 100 applications for this meeting. I apologize in advance, because we are going to have to disappoint about 2/3 of applicants and probably limit to ~1 applicant per lab. Hopefully, attendees from big labs can spread the new news at home.

Work from several groups (including Suzanne Eaton, who we lost last year) suggests freezing Drosophila stocks may be possible. Opportunity for brave student.

The deadline for the 3rd Neuro-Evo conference is fast approaching (Dec. 1). Come and learn about the latest work and new technologies to study brain evolution. Have a young kid? No problem. We have on-site daycare for conference attendees!

Sadly, grad student & I learned that not everyone knows these basic rules. THREAD: Things NOT to do when you are a senior male at a conference and a junior female trainee gives a talk: 1) Do NOT sit up front shaking your head in disagreement throughout her talk.

Lovely work from Jonathan Massey. Overturns 100 years of incorrect assumption about the yellow gene. an assumption I gave up only after long arguments, and lots of data!

This is really a beautiful study. Heterochrony of a transmembrane protein causes species divergence in male genitalia. Much to follow up. tartan underlies the evolution of Drosophila male genital morphology

Wonderful dispatch with characteristically elegant visuals by N. Gompel and on our paper ()! It so nicely breaks down the study into digestible bits. Thanks for writing it.

We’ve been playing around with eFRET GEVIs and figured out how to flip the signal. We made the first bright, positive-going GEVI with sub-millisecond response kinetics. Check out the preprint and let us know what you think:

Many interesting (to me!) details from the results, including fact that inter-specific transgenic rescue may NOT be the best way to detect functional genetic evolution. Can be masked by epistasis. Reciprocal hemizygosity test may be more powerful in most cases?

Just realized that this year marks the centenary of Drosophila evolutionary genetics, with Sturtevant's discovery of D. simulans and his work on hybrid incompatibility. Should have had a meeting and a party! Read about it in Barbash's excellent history:
