I think what Alan meant was that the basis for any true knowledge is the journey. By keeping only the barest visible facts & their apparent successes, we forget where things come from. We forget intention. We lose sense of where things could go. A chain has been broken.

I keep coming back to "ancient" technology to see it from the future, to try to see what the goals where and what happened, and how it would've happened today. The other day I was relearning things about WML and WAP for a WebXR idea for example.

I wish I could know more about who were involved and what their v3 or v4 visions where, because we only get the minimal viable shippable thing. I wish I could see the future they saw.
