There are >5 billion smartphone users and 1-5 million monthly active VR users. So we should expect a discrepency of somewhere between 1000x and 5000x in a comparison like this. I am not suprised.
Another important VR exponential is PPI growth ("Pixels-Per-Inch") over time. When the Vive Pro came out, PPI was growing at 23.4% per year, which when extrapolated is enough to match human eye quality within a decade. Only if VR product is engaging enough to encourage cyclical hardware investment on the part of consumers.
