The foundational challenge in design is that it's easy to make things hard and hard to make things simple.

Tools can be the artifact of accumulated wisdom, but they do not intrinsically pass on any of that embodied wisdom to the user. Wisdom is an experience/dialogue/story. Our tools never explain themselves, or tell us stories. It could be different. Our tools could be more alive.

I've heard stories of unseen futures: Alan Kay wanted a universal OS-wide undo/redo button that applied to 'all' actions on 'all' computers. This would have radically changed the user expeirence & feel of learning tech because 'everything would always be safe'

Society will not be measured the accumulation of our accomplishments, but by the accumlation and quality of our wisdoms. And our ability to act on them.

New generations will come now, as though born from that terrifying fire which will not cease. As they approach, we must value with depth & dedication the passing of journeys.

All hope isn't lost, but we have lost something. Computers were built with purpose, meaning, values & vision. Elements of their creation infuse our world, whether we know them or not. Like the birth of fire, we don't know the full story, but we carry the full burden.

I think what Alan meant was that the basis for any true knowledge is the journey. By keeping only the barest visible facts & their apparent successes, we forget where things come from. We forget intention. We lose sense of where things could go. A chain has been broken.

Alan Kay once told me "Computer Science isn't a Science because it has no history. We just forget it! Don't even write it down."

Procrastination is an exploration in the anti-fragility of the universe, or as the Zen Proverb goes, "Sitting quietly, doing nothing, spring comes, and grass grows by itself."

Taste is an understanding of some element of the sublime, either ephemeral or eternal, which elicits feeling in people. Greater taste imples greater understanding (at least in ways that are externally visible). Worth contemplating the saying, "youth has no wisdom & age no taste"

The Bay Area regional STEM fair should be the best funded & best equipped in the country, but actually it needs your help!

Computers shouldn't be limited to "day" or "night" modes, they should be fully time & weather dynamic. I want my computer to sunset at night & sunrise in the morning. I want moonlit dew collecting on the sides of my scrollbars & moss growing at the feet of my ancient documents.

Gosh, water has such a 'living' quality to it, I can only hope the same can be said about our technology one day.

Programming is a conversation between a person and an machine which results in software artifacts. Over time this conversation should become deeper, richer, and quicker until it feels like a conversation between two equals.

If it becomes easier to write eloquently & more pleasurable to read we'll see different trends. Similarly we need to make it easier to convey & absorb wisdom. These goals are not out of bounds for the frontiers of tech & society & should be a topic of more debate & discussion.

Thus great works of wisdom & past are drowned by the every day happenings of people. We begin to think everything is new & outrageous & without meaning. We should instead seek out what's actually new & incredible with a deep appreciation for the context & beauty of all things.

The rate at which we create new content is staggering & has real consequence. It's easier for a million people to tweet on toilets than for one person to churn out a new Illiad. Likewise we're more likely to 'pump our tweets' than Shakespere (for social signaling).

The trend towards short-form seems caused by the effort-ratio between reading/writing, sharing/experiencing. It's easy to 'write a lot of words', but they don't always convey experience & it remains a lot of work to read 'everything'.

The ease of sending/recieving text is moving us towards a style more like oral tradition, where short-form reigns supreme & everything is more intrinsically fleeting.

I wonder how good we 'really' *are* at writing as a society.... Probably not as good as we are at reading right? Can someone even be better at writing than they are at reading? How has this trended over time?

Tethers are an extremely underappreciated space technology. You can use them to de-orbit satellites, generate power, or fling cargo to higher orbits. We're biased against these things because tethers don't do these things on Earth, but space is not Earth!
