When he was on NBC late night he was cutting edge and hilarious. Then he moved to CBS and was great for a while but then slowly became a bitter man.

He was funniest on NBC. Once he moved to CBS he got progressively more sanctimonious and less funny.

Mid-80s, when it seemed like NBC was unaware he was using their facilities to do a talk show. It was irreverent and sharp.

He was different than Carson...had some nice exchanges w/guests, but I never found his bits funny & he couldn't hold a candle to Carson.

He was funny in the 90’s but always had a mean streak, which become much more pronounced as he has aged.
