We need more films like Army of Darkness nowadays. Action-packed, hilarious and iconic as all get out.

In other news, the video player application now freezes my Ubuntu system, hard. I guess the animations I'm generating are too awesome for it.

Late last night, fueled by Nacho Fries and Baja Blast, I made a ton of improvements to my curl noise effect, including staggered particle generation and time-shifted potential. Still need to add depth-sorting before I'm ready to show the results.

Wife and I like to have fake arguments. Me, annoyed that I didn't do writing on Sunday: We didn't get ANYTHING done this weekend! Wife: We cleaned the WHOLE HOUSE! Me: Well THE HOUSE doesn't make me $11 a month on Amazon, DOES IT?

Very cool! These books are on my to read list. I wish I was better at math so I could come up with based stuff instead of flim-flam. 😅

There is much more to be said on this topic, but to summarize, when looking at abstract math concepts, rather than think about what things ARE, I like to think about what they DO. Real numbers scale. Complex numbers scale and rotate. (Quaternions scale and rotate in 3D.) 9/9

In this system, "i" is replaced by the "2-blade" (yes it's called a blade) e1e2. Math is better with swords. And we can get quaternions (which describe rotations in 3 dimensions) by using 3 basis elements: e1, e2, e3 => e1e2, e2e3, e3e1 ~ i, j, k (roughly) 8/

    There are better ways to express it, IMO, for instance the geometric algebra way, where you have two basis elements e1 and e2, that behave like this: e1 x e1 = 1 e2 x e2 = 1 e1 x e2 = - e2 x e1 (Do you see the rotation?) 7/

The "witchcraft" of i being the square root of negative one is just a consequence of creating a number system that expresses this rotational behavior in multiplication. 6/

Since "i" is a complex number of length 1 that is 90 degrees to the x axis, it's action is to rotate things by 90 degrees, as DJ pointed out. (People seem to have an irrational fear of radians, but we can leave them out of the discussion) 5/

If we picture a complex number as a 2D arrow, then it does 2 things when multiplied: 1) scale by the length of the arrow 2) rotate by the angle between the arrow and the x-axis. That's it. 4/

Complex numbers (numbers that have both a real and imaginary part) *ROTATE and scale* things when multiplied. Picture a grid, with the real number line on the x axis and the imaginary numbers on the y axis. 3/

Real numbers *scale* things when multiplied. Imagine a number line, with an arrow from zero to a number. Let's take 2 as an example. When we multiply 2 by 3, we get 6. The arrow is 3 times longer. Seems obvious. 2/

Remember imaginary numbers? That annoying letter "i" that people said was the square root of -1? What if you thought about it differently...rather than what "i" is, what it DOES. 1/
