One explanation I received from over the pond was that the USA is a constitutional republic dedicated to individual liberty, and not necessarily a democracy, which would not actually have to have any element of liberty.

It's already occurred on many county levels. It must be a calculated strategy. Is it funded by Koch? Mercer? Rebranded Tea Party? Who's funding Patriot Front marching in DC this past week while using the Betsy Ross Flag that was controversial last summer?
