  2. I'm pretty sceptical though that "virtual" academic exchanges will ever soak up demand for real placements - even with the massive tech leaps forward he envisages - not least because studying abroad is about building cultural and social capital.

    good piece on major issue: Germany went from equal funding for all universities, so that "business chiefs" usually went to their local U, to trying to create an elite with competition for new funds at the margins. Results? Better universities?
