You really think Rs wouldn’t have changed the rules in 2017 if Ds hadn’t in 2013?

They could only lose two. Not sure McCain, Collins and Murky go along with it. McCain and Collins were part of the Gang of 14 in 2005, and Murky owes nothing to the right anymore.

None of them batted an eyelash before nuking the scotus filibuster. I find it hard to imagine they‘d just take it if Ds blockaded Trump noms

Oh sure--none of them batted an eyelash, but after Ds nuked the Ct. App. filibuster it was pretty much a given that the SCOTUS filibuster was gone. Like I said, Graham, McCain and Collins were part of the crew that saved the filibuster in 05, not sure why they wouldn't in '17.

I don’t see why it was a given any more than Reid’s nuke was a given - it was their decision. Can you imagine them shrugging off cabinet filibusters early ‘17 given the immediate pressure it’d impose?

What if there weren’t cabinet fimibusters except in an isolated case or two?

I suspect the pressure would overwhelm after the first filibuster. Maybe Ds get one scalp. Then what? McConnell is no shrinking violet and the moderates wouldn’t find it hard to rationalize going along

McConnell is ruthless but my point is that things would be different and we’re all making assumptions.

I mean, while we’re doing alternate history here, what if Rs vote for stimulus and approve more Obama nominees, then no pressure on Reid to go nuclear. Or what if W nominates some token centrists/Dems and Ds allow Estrada? We can keep going back but it is what it is.

Exactly. What if Reagan never nominated Bork and the judicial wars/bitterness didn’t begin? The way they’ve been ratcheting up ever since, it’s always been headed here

What if Bork didn’t get Borked?
