Hey @davidmdrucker, career campaigner here—would love to talk to you more about why your assumptions are not the experience of most of us in the industry, & are part of why rich white kids have an unfair leg up in political careers.https://twitter.com/davidmdrucker/status/986052803595505666 …

Bizarre. Working a campaign is not a career - it’s supposed to be a calling. These are temporary gigs that need to max out every dollar raised in order to win. => https://twitter.com/aseitzwald/status/986051206429765634 …

+1. What's bizarre is the assertion that something can't be both a calling and a career. Organizers, nurses, teachers...most of these folks choose their work because feel called to serve. We should be elevating their professions. Not diminishing them.

If Dem donors want to pony up extra cash for campaigns to complete the mission while underwriting extra benefits than maybe it'll work. Politics can be both, but I was referring specifically to individual campaigns, which have defined end date & are subject to FEC limits

I think the issue here is acknowledging that organizing is a real job that should come with healthcare + sustainable hours. Staff salaries are usually less than 20% of campaign budgets. If we want to respect donors, we should stop throwing $ at mail & TV ads that don't work.

Clearly campaigns shouldn't waste money on things that don't work. But paying more for staff than necessary could put Dems at competitive disadvantage. That's why Repubs in my TL are all for it. I think your argument is better for non-fed races where you can raise soft money

Right. But let's define "necessary." The average organizer salary on a *presidential* campaign is $2800/month...When I started it it was $2300/month. Less on congressionals. And they regularly work upwards of 80-90 hours per week. Do you really think that meets the bar?
