FedEx and UPS add surcharges to locations that are not in their routine delivery areas and it's not cheap. Just completed a project analyzing lowest cost freight options for a client that ships a portion of their business e-Commerce.

I think we mostly see it the same way. My only point is USPS has already sunk the cost of delivering everywhere everyday, thus can be more cost competitive for that portion of the job.

Other shippers don't in a cost-effective manner. They use USPS for the last mile in low density parts of the country, excepting big $ shipping products. The hilarity is that if you privatize or kill USPS, it's going to be the rural Trump voter that loses.

No one will maintain daily low cost service to them without the implicit subsidy and mandate USPS is under. You want to send a package to your rural Trump votin' cousin, be prepared to pay up through the nose. And a local office in dingledell pop 1004? Drive to the Wal-Mart UPS.
