Right. It’s a reaffirmation of modern Republican politics: all they care about is the conservative base. It might be a good short term strategy, but seems like a really poor medium to long term one.

Not arguing any of that here and some of it is correct but in a midterm w/ headwinds, getting their base to show up literally is their only hope. Only possible edge (doubtful at that) is that their base more likely to turn out in midterm.

I agree. Though, I think it’s a slightly mixed bag: playing to the base makes them less likely to keep the majority imho, but more likely to keep losses from truly catastrophic numbers. B/c the majority runs through PA, NJ, CA & suburban districts. But base turnout will save the

Secondary targets that turn losing the majority into a total wipeout where we sit here the next day & say gee how did he lose?!?! Now you can argue that people like Ryan owe fealty not just to party, but to country, a la Howard Baker. But that’s not how today’s politics work.
