One doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other. He looks at each deal as a one-off. In politics & gov't, everything is connected. He doesn't always operate as though he gets that.

i mean obviously i dont know his internal thinking either but i would think the more likely scenario is that the guy who does multi million dollar deals internationally & rose to the highest office on a foreign-policy based platform probably "gets" a little bit of it

I didn't say POTUS was an idiot - I said doesn't appear to get this 1 thing. (Bush implemented steel tariffs too, I don't think that was right just cuz wasn't Trump) Plus I regularly offered critical analysis of Obama (ie. Iran deal) despite how smart he is given elected prez

I mean (I don't like the comparison but..) did MacArthur land and Inchon because he just "didn't get" that he was supposed to break out of the Pusan perimeter and march north the normal way? or because he thought his way was better

I'm not arguing that Trump doesn't think his way is better and has his reasons, I'm saying his reasoning is faulty & not better. I'm not criticizing motives or saying he's not a thinking person.

or, if you went to a used car lot and the salesman said "I want to show you the greatest car in the world!" and took you to an old beater, would you say "this guy is bad at his job because he doesn't even know that's not the best car in the world"?

Trump's motives are not the issue - his methods are.

him instituting a tariff on chinese solar panels caused a chinese company to open a plant here in the US. what's the issue with that method?

Steep steel tariffs are not solar tariffs. But even that gets beyond my broader critique.

so your critique was a narrow one only about "steep" steel tariffs? come on

We're going around in circles now. I stand by my analysis; I think some of your arguments have merit despite differing from mine, you argue well. Now I have to write an actual story.

we might be going in circles because you're deliberately ignoring every question i ask you. you could have had a substantive convo in less time than that took. good luck with the story

i say "what time is it david". you don't answer. is that because you "weren't persuaded" or because you ignored my question?

That's not what I did. I just defended my position. You said I got the time wrong, I said I didn't, to use your example.
