.@realDonaldTrump’s weak spot is a lack of understanding of geopolitics & the interconnectedness of everything. All presidents have weak spots (the last one had his weak spots) - this is Trump’s. => https://twitter.com/jonathanvswan/status/969203979245662208 …

One doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other. He looks at each deal as a one-off. In politics & gov't, everything is connected. He doesn't always operate as though he gets that.

i mean obviously i dont know his internal thinking either but i would think the more likely scenario is that the guy who does multi million dollar deals internationally & rose to the highest office on a foreign-policy based platform probably "gets" a little bit of it

I didn't say POTUS was an idiot - I said doesn't appear to get this 1 thing. (Bush implemented steel tariffs too, I don't think that was right just cuz wasn't Trump) Plus I regularly offered critical analysis of Obama (ie. Iran deal) despite how smart he is given elected prez

I mean (I don't like the comparison but..) did MacArthur land and Inchon because he just "didn't get" that he was supposed to break out of the Pusan perimeter and march north the normal way? or because he thought his way was better

I'm not arguing that Trump doesn't think his way is better and has his reasons, I'm saying his reasoning is faulty & not better. I'm not criticizing motives or saying he's not a thinking person.

isn't it possible that Trump is using the economic might of the US as a club to get better deals on things "or else" he might do something that he never intended to do? or, isn't it possible he might be right about tariffs and General Kelly is wrong? isn't that actually likely?

Anything is possible; I don't find it likely. If he's not really the quasi-protectionist he's claimed to be for 40 years (this is on topic on which he's been consistent) than so be it. If he achieves an amazing outcome, then I'll be wrong. So be it.

obviously you don't find it likely but of the two men, Kelly or Trump, who is likely to have a better understanding of what would actually happen if Trump imposes the tariffs he's been thinking about for 40 years

This argument is not compelling. Bernie Sanders has been thinking about economics for 40 years - that doesn't make his preference for Socialism (or quasi-socialism) the right choice.

you're seriously comparing Bernie and Trump in terms of their real world experience with international economies? Do me a favor and just say that out loud to whoever is in your vicinity right now and see what look they give you

I'm comparing your standard of 'thinking about a subject matter for 40 years.'

my standard was clearly the pairing of credibility based on results with having long considered what he's doing now. If you were critiquing Bernie on making a living while pretending to run against someone he actually supported, I would mention that you were being silly then too
