The NRA does indeed block gun-related legislation by pushing propaganda to its members, scaring them into thinking every conceivable action on gun safety is a mortal threat the 2nd Amendment and their actual lives. If people kill people, not guns, why not regulate people?

& your claim that the NRA's contributions have zero impact on legislators' votes is patently false (best case conjecture). IMO this is a deeply irresponsible summary judgment for a voice on outlets who claim to have journalistic integrity. Pick facts, not sides.
@CNN @dcexamimer -
I didn't say zero impact. I said wildly overstated impact and if you're going to actually be successful in changing gun laws it would helpful to understand the politics of guns & what motivates Republicans & Republican voters on this issue...
-
Your tweet said “X, not Y”, so while I accept and agree that both issues are key to understanding the entire issue (as regards the NRA), your initial statement was black and white and therefore misleading, especially to those who wish to be mislead and obtain FUD ammunition.

People are pretty smart. Tweets have character limits. I was making a specific point. But appreciate the engagement. It's an important distinction to make.
-
Two years ago I’d be in 100% agreement on making a point vs being pedantic. But when efficient slogans like
#BlackLivesMatter
creates artificial controversy vs #BlackLivesDontNotMatter, it seems like people will try to (figuratively) hang themselves with even an inch of rope...

But the NRA drives policy positions that are extreme. They have fought against background checks for private sales and at gun shows for non dealers. And of course their money is important to candidates.
-
If republicans are that easy to buy off, why doesn’t planned parenthood or the sierra club or everytown just pay them?

Rifles were used to kill 374 people in 2016. Blunt objects (hammers) killed 472. Feet and fists killed 656 people. Knives were used to kill 1604 people. The obsession with "scary" assault rifles is misplaced and prevents a meaningful dialogue on gun laws.

Dear David... $$'s translate into advertising...advertising translates into endorsements...hence mass media uses advertising to sell products for companies to the public... Hence NRA $$'s translates to voters. Cut out the NRA $$'s and you starve the beast

Their members will not go away. Their members' opinions will not suddenly change. That was my point.
-
@Emma4Change The young men and women leading this fight in Florida are not as naive as you to think it will be a sudden. They are in it to endure and change those voters and politicians opinions that have tossed their hands up, having left them in harms way#NeverAgain

It’s a disservice that the left uses adolescents to further their own agenda
-
The “left” didn’t do this-the kids did this!
-
Oh please don’t be that naive that these kids didn’t all get into buses and shipped to this destination bc they thought it was their moral obligation to do so.
-
Yeah! They were each offered free trips to Tallahassee and coupons to McDonalds and since it was old news that 14 friends and 3 adults were massacred-they were so over it-they said WTF!
-
If you don’t think these kids weren’t bussed up to Tallahassee fed and put up in hotels by Debbie Wasserman-Shultz you have to be out of your ever-loving mind!
-
If you don’t think these kids aren’t terrified and furious all on their own you have to be out of your ever loving mind!
