Free speech is protected, you are correct. This amendment protects your ability to voice opinion/beliefs primarily, without fear of imprisonment. But, it does not include publishing lies. If you doubt this, check out the lawsuit Carol Burnett won against the National Enquirer.

I don't doubt this. But pols claim "lies" all the time that either aren't or it's such a gray area that deference is given to the publisher.

Pretty sure libel protects individuals from downright lies. And you guys do that a lot!

I agree. But there is often a disagreement about what that is and usually speech is given deference. Pols claim all the time that something is a lie that in fact is not.

I wasn’t aware that Freedom of speech allowed news networks to blatantly produce false stories on ppl which were based on lies which the networks knew were based on lies but reported them as fact anyway? Once the lie is out there saying ooop’s we screwed up does stop the lie

First Amendment does not protect all speech. That includes imminent violence, obscenity, defamation and libel. Weirum v. RKO General, Unc. Know your Constitution...

I think libel law requires you prove malice which seems to be a high bar in many cases. Perhaps this is what Trump is after
