How the Republican Party became the guardian of the Confederacy & its symbols. My latest for @VanityFair:http://bit.ly/2yRtdqh
I don't think the two should be conflated, or that one has anything to do w/ the other.

the Confederacy was an attempt to bring the colonies back to the original vision of the Founders, that's indisputable
-
That other part of the Confederacy, maintaining slavery, overshadows everything else.
-
a person who looks at the Confederacy & sees only slavery is like someone who looks at Yorktown or Concord & sees only that too
-
I don't conflate the Revolution & the Founders w/ the Confederacy & its leading figures. I just don't. Much different.
-
its not different in any way than looking at the Confederate constitution and realizing that Presidential term limits are a good idea
-
There's a difference between revering ideas & the men who are responsible for them from certain actions. This does a disservice to Founders
-
it only does a disservice to the Founders if in your mind "Confederate" is short hand for "awful, irredeemable person".

the giant permanent bureaucracy we are stuck with in modern times is a direct result of that kind of model losing the war
