Pelosi & Reid are good - but they had an engaged president who kept things on track =>https://twitter.com/geoffgarin/status/887119415107518464 …

    David M. Drucker added,

    Geoff Garin @geoffgarin
Harry Reid passed the ACA through the Senate with no cushion in his caucus. McConnell's woes are a good reminder of Reid's skill as leader.

Reid and Pelosi got their members to cast votes that threatened their re-election, has Mitch ever done the same?

To be fair many believed they'd be rewarded for the votes once the bill passed.

True for some but for many a huge risk as was proven in the next election

I agree my point is I don't think they really thought they were voting themselves out of office. Some knew, many didn't.

And they took a drubbing four subsequent elections in a row. Gotta get past this all or nothing mentality

I beg to differ. 2012 may have marginally improved D positioning but it set them up for a mayor dropoff in 2014 and anemic comeback in 2016

2012 was a good election for Dems. They won WH, won House seats, held Senate by winning seats. Very simple. 2010/14 were the drubbings

Not that anything about ACA was easy, but if Rs had 60 votes they'd have a better shot at squaring this circle. Byrd handcuffs chafe.

Reid was evil enough that fellow Democrats didn't dare go against him. He was also smart enough to know how to enforce his threats.
