There's also a case to be made that intervening wouldn't have prevented the carnage AND gotten us into a decades-long war.

Yep, there's a case for that as well. What we ended up doing hasn't worked. But that might have failed also.

You could probably replace "Iraq" w/ any war to have that discussion. Afghanistan is the "good" war & complexities abound.

Great point. Rationale discussion is needed about complexities of going to war or not, yet what we often get is the opposite.
